Recording Camp

Time to hit record.

Spend a weekend in the studio with a band of KitchenJam guitarists and find out what it feels like when the red light goes on. You go home with a seven-song live record you played on.

It's the same weekend we ran in the summer, now with eight places.

  • Next camps: 6 to 7 Feb, 10 to 11 Apr
  • Both days: 3pm to 8pm
  • Price: £250 for members, £350 for everyone else
  • Places: 8 per camp
  • Who for: Adults who can play a few songs

What happens over the weekend

You get three songs to learn at home before the weekend. On Saturday the band learns four more together. On Sunday the red light goes on and we record all seven, live, as a band. Everything before Sunday is there so you know the songs well enough to enjoy that moment.

Before the weekend

  1. We send you three songs to get ready at home.

Saturday, 3pm to 8pm

  1. Meet the band and play through your three songs together.
  2. Learn four more songs as a band. With eight of you there's room for doubled guitars, lead lines and harmonies.

Sunday, 3pm to 8pm

  1. The red light goes on. Record all seven songs together, live, as a band.
  2. That's your record. Darryl mixes it after the weekend, and we send it to you.

What you go home with

A live record

Seven songs recorded by your band, with your playing on every one, to keep and play to anyone who'll listen. Darryl mixes it after the weekend, and we send it to you.

Seven new songs

Three you get ready at home and four you learn on the day, all ready to play again.

Time in a band

Ten hours playing with seven other guitarists, listening to each other and locking in together.

Is it for me?

It's for you if you can already play a few songs from start to finish. You don't need to have recorded before, and you don't need to play lead.

You're probably ready if you've done any of these:

  • come to Riffs & Solos
  • played in a student band or at one of our band workshops
  • played at the Big Gig or an open mic

It isn't one for complete beginners. If you're still learning your first chords, a band workshop is a good first step. You'll find them on What's On.

Not sure? Ask your teacher in class, or email us at hello@kitchenjam.com.

Who runs it

Darryl and Zainab from KitchenJam run the weekend, and Darryl mixes your record afterwards.

FAQs

Do I need to have recorded before?

No. We take you through it step by step.

How good do I need to be?

You should be able to play a few songs all the way through. If you're not sure, ask us.

What should I bring?

Your guitar, and a pair of headphones with a cable (not wireless ones), so you can plug into the studio's monitor mix. We have the amps.

Who picks the songs?

We do, so the parts suit the band. You get three of them before the weekend to get ready.

Do I have to sing?

No. There's room for two or three singers on each camp, and they usually play guitar as well. If you'd like to sing, email us once you've booked.

Can I play bass instead?

Yes, there's room for one bass player on each camp. If you'd like that spot, email us once you've booked.

Do I need to come to both days?

Yes. Your place covers both. Saturday is when the band learns the songs, and Sunday is when we record them.

What if I get nervous when the red light's on?

Most people do, and that's what the weekend is for. By Sunday you'll have played the songs plenty of times, so you can enjoy it.

Will I be filmed?

We may film a little for Instagram. Just tell us on the day if you'd rather not be in shot.

Can teenagers come?

It's adults only.

Is there a members' price?

Yes. Members pay £250 with the code from their members' email. Everyone else pays £350.

Can I book for a friend?

Yes, you can book up to two places at once.

What if I can't make it after booking?

Our booking policies are at kitchenjam.com/policies.
